Nurturing Postpartum Support for Every Journey: Doula Care Beyond Birth Part I

Hey  Friends, I am Shawanna, a black birth worker in South Jersey. I am the founder of Born From A Lotus Doula Services and the host of the Spiritual Millennial Mama Podcast.  I am dedicated to providing holistic care to pregnant individuals throughout their journey, acknowledging that not every pregnancy ends with a baby. It is crucial to recognize that the hormonal shifts and emotional adjustments that occur after any pregnancy can have a profound impact on one's mental health. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of postpartum doula work for every kind of pregnancy, including those experiencing stillbirth, miscarriage, adoption, or surrogacy. Every pregnant person deserves compassionate support during this vulnerable and transformative time.

Acknowledging the Hormonal Shifts:

Regardless of the outcome, pregnancy triggers significant hormonal changes in a person's body. After delivery, there is a drastic shift in hormone levels, including estrogen, progesterone, and oxytocin, which can lead to postpartum mental illnesses such as postpartum depression and anxiety. Understanding this physiological aspect is crucial for providing adequate support to individuals who have experienced various pregnancy outcomes.

Supporting Individuals after Stillbirth or Miscarriage:

Experiencing the loss of a baby through stillbirth or miscarriage can be emotionally devastating. Postpartum doula support can play a vital role in providing comfort, empathy, and practical assistance during this challenging time. By creating a safe space for grieving and offering emotional support, doulas can help individuals navigate their grief, process their emotions, and establish healthy coping mechanisms. Additionally, doulas can assist with physical recovery, provide resources for bereavement support groups, and help facilitate conversations around future family planning.

Navigating Postpartum in Adoption:

For those who choose adoption as their path, the postpartum period can still be emotionally complex. Birth parents may experience a range of emotions, including grief, loss, relief, or a mixture of them all. Postpartum doulas can offer non-judgmental emotional support, actively listen to their feelings, and provide a safe space for processing these emotions. They can also assist with postpartum recovery, and self-care practices, and connect individuals with adoption support groups or counseling services if desired.

Supporting the Surrogate Parent:

Surrogacy involves a unique set of circumstances where the person carrying the baby is not the intended parent. Postpartum doulas can offer vital support during this time, ensuring the surrogate parent receives the necessary physical and emotional care as they recover from the birth experience. Doulas can help manage postpartum discomfort, provide information on breastfeeding (if applicable), and assist in establishing healthy boundaries and communication between the surrogate parent and intended parents.

Embracing the Diverse Experiences:

In every kind of pregnancy, postpartum doula care should be inclusive, sensitive, and tailored to the individual's unique needs and circumstances. Doulas can foster an environment of non-judgment, actively listening to their clients, and acknowledging the full range of emotions that can arise during the postpartum period. By offering compassionate support, doulas empower individuals to heal, seek appropriate resources, and find their own path to resilience.

Postpartum doula work extends far beyond supporting individuals after traditional, full-term births. It encompasses a broad spectrum of experiences, including stillbirth, miscarriage, adoption, and surrogacy. Every pregnant person deserves compassionate care during their postpartum journey, despite the outcome. By recognizing the hormonal shifts and emotional challenges that accompany all pregnancies, we can provide nurturing support, helping individuals navigate their unique circumstances, heal, and build resilience for their future. Together, we can create a postpartum culture that truly supports every person, fostering empathy and healing within our diverse communities.
